Ten Year Anniversary X: TOTAH
10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY X February 25th - May 2nd, 2026 TOTAH presents X, a group exhibition celebrating the gallery's 10 year anniversary. X opens on Wednesday, February 25th, 2026, and features 29 artists, both living and historical.
In numerology, the number 10 signifies a cyclical ending and beginning all at once. The opening date carries an additional association with 10: the numbers of February 25, 2026 add up to 10, and in turn 1, the root of opportunity. Since TOTAH first opened with Bochner/Boetti on February 25, 2016, the program has grown steadily, now encompassing 12 artists. Both Lauretta Vinciarelli and Wallace Berman, artists whose estates are represented by TOTAH, passed away on their birthdays, one of multiple synchronicities in TOTAH's orbit. This February marks Berman's 100th anniversary, and one year since Mel Bochner's passing. In the past 10 years, TOTAH has collaborated closely with each of its artists to create an alchemy of intimacy and authenticity. The opening of an additional exhibition space and artist residency in Pantelleria, Italy in the summer of 2025 expands on the gallery's dedication to fueling the mutualistic relationship developed with its artists.
Surrealism and the unknown have been embedded in TOTAH's identity since the gallery's inception. In X, European surrealists such as André Masson and Max Ernst exist alongside pop surrealist Kenny Scharf, who in turn nods to American pop icon Tom Wesselmann. Minimalist artist Enrico Castellani converses with Mara De Luca's experimental abstractions and Aleksandar Duravcevic's monochromatic reflections. Figuration and abstraction are linked by an invisible thread made increasingly palpable over the past decade. X exemplifies how artists represented by TOTAH can coexist in harmony with historical precedent, testifying to their timelessness. By including some of the artists once shown with Edward Totah Gallery in the late 70s through the early 90s, TOTAH pays homage to an important component of its DNA.
Mythologist Joseph Campbell believed the idea of "the Grail" symbolized the journey; the possibility of chance, and the notion that when one follows the thread of their intuition while remaining loyal to their authentic impulse, the dynamism of life can be realized. TOTAH has always left room for the unexpected, the promise of potential flowing through the creative realm. The tenth card in Tarot—the Wheel of Fortune—represents the cyclical nature of life and the inevitability of change. As one cycle comes to an end and another begins, TOTAH invites the unpredictable, the kismet. While 10 signifies completion and wholeness, it also represents cyclical infinity and liberation. As the Chinese Zodiac year of the snake sheds its skin and we enter the year of the horse, TOTAH maintains the same youthful enthusiasm it was born out of in each project yet to come.
