A Collective Exhibition at Commerce Street Studios

Commerce Street Studios is pleased to announce The Sentence, a group exhibition featuring new works by 44 artists, each responding to a single word generated through a communal writing game. The exhibition opens January 17, 2026.
About the Exhibition
For The Sentence, participating artists engaged in an exquisite-corpse style writing process: each contributor added a fragment to what came before, ultimately producing a sprawling and unruly sentence part poem, part incantation. Each artist was then randomly assigned a single word from this collaboratively generated text, using it as the conceptual springboard for a new work.
The resulting sentence both chaotic and unexpectedly cohesive becomes the exhibition's spine:
"The sound reflection feels shimmery like a trucker speeding down wind, eavesdropping fragments born from morphogenesis' tapestry, developing oblong notes that ricochet silhouettes, rounding, dancing - example her language was sudden, aquiline, charged with hedonism, fully absent from the people giving the finger, which is always a classic gesture of mammalian mumbo jumbo, apotheosis from dust, the diamond forms coins that spin or chromatic juices, sparks that ignite our bellies into a witch goin' hell for leather... or feathers, yet finding quiet in counter-revolutionary juice, reversing until."
Across media and sensibilities, the artists' responses form a constellation, where each work stands alone yet remains tethered to a shared linguistic origin. Instead of a single curatorial vision, the exhibition is structured around an evolving communal mechanism, revealing how language fragments can catalyze visual invention.
